By now, residents are becoming used to campaign signs popping all over town, and that means one thing: election season is upon us in Troup County. Local elections not only dictate how local ordinances, but also what taxes will fund.

Hogansville and LaGrange have already held candidate forums hosted by the LaGrange–Troup County Chamber of Commerce.

West Point’s forum will be held Monday night where Mayor Pro Tem Steve Tramell and Deedee Williams are running in a special election to fill Congresman Drew Fegurson’s former position. Incumbents Gloria Ramesy Marshall and Jospeh R. Downs III are also running for council positions along with John H. Morrison, Alabteo Henry Hutchinson and Tracy Jemar Bandy.

For those living in West Point, it is important to try and to make the forum because it will give insight to where each candidate stands on local positions. The West Point City Council votes on things that affect the short-term and long-term outlook for the community.

This year, they’ve voted unanimously to change the millage rate and change the time of alcohol sales for distilled spirits and malt liquor in the city. They have voted to approve a $9.5 million bond for Hyundai Dymos and approved a $750,000 grant for the old high school.

Whatever your position is on these issues, it’s best to know what the current local politicians and local candidates think of these things before going to the polls.

There’s another West Point political forum for the candidates that will be held Wednseday at The Active Life in West Point at 11 a.m. In case residents miss the first forum, attending that one would be a good idea.

The forum will be held at New Horizon Community Theatre on 411 W. 8th Street. It begins at 6 p.m.
