Downtown Saturday night is for the local bookworms with the 17th annual Leggin’ It for Literacy 5K and Fun Run at 7:30 p.m. Debbie Burdette, Troup County Certified Literacy Program Director, said the annual fundraiser is one of the three fundraisers the program holds to promote literacy in the county.

“The funds (from this) benefit literacy programs and literacy awareness in Troup County,” Burdette said. “We provide scholarships for General Equivalency Development students, we have dictionaries for third graders, we have books for babies for the first steps hospital, we’ve provided incentives for the GED program and we sponsor reception for the GED graduation among other things.”

Burdette said the race was created when the literacy program started.

“17 years ago, when the CLPC was initiated, we needed a fundraiser, so there was a group of business people who came together and decided this as their idea,” she said. “We’ve been going strong since.”

The event will have activities for children including face painting and cornhole. There will even be a one-mile tot-trot and Mama Jama will make an appearance, Burdette said.

A college football game will be shown on televisions at the event too.

Burdette said even people not participating in the race can support the event by watching, cheering on runners or by donating to the literacy program.

The race will start outside Golden’s Bike Shop and finish on Church Street. It’s $30 to register and registration starts at 5:30 p.m., she said,

“They can just show up, and they get a graphic t-shirt. At the end of the race, they’ll get a Country’s Barbecue sandwich and a big glass of sweet tea,” she said.

If you would rather relax for weekend entertainment, LaGrange College is holding its Telluride MountainFilm Festival Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The featured documentaries include films focused on environmental issues, epic adventure and politics among other topics. The festival will be at Recital Hall West Side Building.

The Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade will take place in Hogansville from 10 a.m. until noon. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the parade is at 11 a.m. The parade will start at Calvin Hipp Veterans Memorial Park. There is no registration fee.

Hills & Dales Estate will hold its Azalea Storytelling Festival: Stories in the Garden Sunday at the pecan grove Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is a family-friendly event and admission is free.
