Williams announces candidacy for West Point mayor

Deedee Williams announces her candidacy for West Point Mayor. Williams was born and raised in West Point, graduated from West Point High School and holds degrees in mathematics and business from LaGrange College.

Williams said she is running for mayor because she wants West Point to be a city where all citizens are valued, wants West Point to be a city where all children have an opportunity to attend high-performing schools regardless of their socio economic level and for the city to have more recreation and entertainment options.

She wants to see changes which will improve the quality of life for all residents, including offering amenities to attract individuals and businesses to locate to West Point to live, work, play, raise a family and/or start and grow a business.

Some of the topics that comprise her platform are education, economic and community development, diversification of jobs, affordable housing, retail options, poverty and inclusion to achieve opportunity for all citizens.

Williams has served on the West Point Development Authority (Treasurer), West Point Business Council (Founding Co-chair), LaGrange College Board of Trustees, LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce (Executive Board and Diplomat Committee), Troup County Court Appointed Special Advocates-CASA (board member), Troup CARES (board member), The Links, Incorporated and Keeney United Methodist Church (Administrative Council Chair, PPRC Chair, Board of Trustees).

Williams said her business career includes leadership roles in Fortune 500 Corporations, as well as a privately owned company and a not-for-profit agency. She believes her experience, education and community leadership prepare her for the role of mayor.

Each candidate running for political office in Troup County can submit a free announcement of candidacy to the LaGrange Daily News. The announcement must be 300 words or less and should discuss biographical information, experience, qualifications and platform issues. A photo can be included but is not a requirement. The deadline for announcements is Oct. 31.
