For the second straight year, the Suffering Artist art studio in Hogansville will hold a special exhibit meant to honor veterans.

The exhibit titled “Mighty and Humble: An Artistic Tribute to Veterans” will feature work from eight local artists and will open with a reception on Saturday, Nov. 18.

All of the work in the show will pay tribute to men and women who have served in the armed forces.

The show will include photography, paintings, drawings, a digital slideshow, crafts and memorabilia. Suffering Artist owner Sarah Swanson said the idea for the show came from her husband, Chris, who works in the history department at Newnan High School.

“We wanted to make it a yearly tradition,” Swanson said. “Most of the artists are from Troup County, and we have one from Macon.”

Vietnam veteran Warren Park is also taking part in this year’s show. He is submitting some of the drawings he made while serving in Vietnam.

Swanson said one of the most rewarding parts of the show is seeing how veterans react to the art work.

“A lot of veterans came [last year],” Swanson said before describing a piece she created last year on a veteran who almost got shot down. “He took what we would call today a selfie when he got on the ground. It was a really close call and that’s what we called the piece, ‘Close Call.’ He came up to me after looking at the piece and he bought the thing. He didn’t even ask me how much it was. It was just so special to him to see that experience put into color.”

Many of the art works last year were made by looking at old photographs from the history department at Newnan High School.

“This year they are picking their own images and we’ll see what they can crank out,” Swanson said.

The show will be open through Jan. 6, 2018.
