LaGrange Active Life holds Halloween dance party

On Tuesday afternoon, LaGrange Active Life was filled with cowboys, witches and cats for a Halloween dance that was anything but spooky.

All three Troup County Active Life centers in the county host regular dances, but this is the first Halloween dance that the LaGrange center has hosted.

The dance was a hit, with center regulars enjoying snacks and silly photos between turns around the dance floor in frightfully fun costumes.

“We always have a costume contest on Halloween, so everybody was already dressed up, and we knew people would already be here,” LaGrange Active Life Manager Molly Jones said of the decision to host the dance during the day.

The costume contest was judged by LaGrange College students this year, and many of the contest’s more than 150 participants attended the dance. However, the dance may not have taken place if not for DJ Dave Hawkins, who volunteered his time to provide music for the special event.

“We had a gentleman come to us saying that he would like to donate his time, and he is a DJ who just moved to town, so he gave us a free time slot,” Jones said. “We have the two evening dances (every month), so we thought we’d try a day dance, so we thought, let’s do it on Halloween.”

As the electric slide wound down in the ballroom, a crowd shifted to their seats to catch their breath, and Active Life organizers consider that a win.

“You can see that active is not just our name it is our philosophy,” said Dan Wooten, the Troup County director of aging services.

LaGrange Active Life is located at 140 Ragland Street. The center hosts line-dancing classes led by Mark Richardson on Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. that are open to adults 55 and up. For more information, call (706) 883-1681.
