Callaway quarterback Kedrick Ramsey only threw the ball eight times in last week’s playoff win over Rockmart, but he made the most of those attempts.

Ramsey completed 6-of-8 passes for 104 yards with touchdown passes to Jacob Freeman and DQ Wilkerson.

Ramsey, who has started every game this season at quarterback, averaged 17 yards per completion, so he was not only efficient, but he made big plays with his arm.

In the second quarter, Ramsey threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Freeman, who has enjoyed an exceptional sophomore season.

In the third quarter, it was Ramsey hooking up with Wilkerson on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Ramsey’s big night helped Callaway beat Rockmart 40-35 to reach the third round of the Class AA state playoffs.

Callaway will visit Brooks County on Friday with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

“Kedrick did a great job leading our team,” said Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins. “He gets better each week, and I think his composure in the huddle has improved throughout the season. I’m just proud of his leadership he has displayed each week.”

As has been the case throughout the season, Callaway’s running game was hard to stop.

Senior DJ Atkins led the way for the Cavaliers with 108 yards on 18 carries, and he went over 1,000 yards for the season.

During his two seasons at Callaway, Atkins has run for more than 3,000 yards.

Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby added 54 hard-earned yards on 11 attempts with a touchdown, and senior Qua Hines had 49 yards on six attempts with a pair of touchdowns.

Bigsby’s touchdown run in the first quarter covered 31 yards, and Hines had scoring runs of three and six yards in the second quarter that gave Callaway a 28-14 lead.

Callaway’s offense will try to find the holes in a Brooks County defense that has been solid all season.

The Trojans are allowing fewer than 10 points per game, and in six of their games they’ve given up seven points or less with a pair of shutouts.

In the regular season, three of Brooks County’s players had at least 10 tackles for loss.
