The LaGrange-Troup Homeless Coalition’s Warming Center is open for those in need of shelter through the weekend.

The warming center opens when the temperature hits 37 degrees or below. It opens at 5 p.m. and closes at 8 a.m. It will remain open through Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and open back up as needed.

According to Mike Wilson with New Ventures there is a big need for volunteers, microwavable meals and gloves.

“I’ve given out every single pair of gloves I can find for our guests. Right now we need gloves and we need people willing to give of themselves and spend the night,” he said.

“We had a 15-year-old spend the night last night and played cards with our guests. He could have been doing anything else but he chose to give his time here at the warming center. This is exactly what we need right now.”

The warming center is located at 150 Lukken East. If you need transportation to the center the LaGrange Police Department is willing to give a free ride.

After the warming center closes the local churches who host soup kitchens are providing a place for those in need of warm shelter. Participating churches include the First Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Broad Street Church of Christ.

If you would like to volunteer or donate please call Mike Wilson at (706) 333-7973.

Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens and 20s through the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to check on the four p’s: people, pets, pipes and plants.

Check on the elderly or those who may be in need during this cold weather event. If you do go outside dress warmly, in layers, to avoid hypothermia. Bring your pets inside. Cover plants or bring them inside if possible. Also, insulate exterior pipes to keep them from bursting.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency Monday for 28 Georgia counties located mainly in the southeastern part of the state.
