The LaGrange Police Department is investigating after human remains were found on Fulton Street Thursday afternoon.

Lt. Dale Strickland with the LPD said a group of ATV riders came across the remains Thursday around 5 p.m. near the railroad tracks that run parallel with Greenville Street.

“There’s a large body of property there. They were riding and one of the guys observed what he believed to be the bones of a human being so he called police,” Strickland said. “We came down here last night and were able to observe what he did. We did observe bones of what we believe to be human remains.”

Strickland said the LPD contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who assisted with the recovery.  Since it was nearly dark when the call came in, the process of recovering the remains was ongoing Friday.

“Once it is recovered, it will go to the GBI crime lab, and they’ll begin the process of whatever they need to do to assist us in identifying the [remains],” Strickland said.

Strickland said [the remains] had “been there for some time.” He estimated the remains were from a person who had been dead for at least a year, if not longer.
