This weekend events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will add an extra layer of significance and reflection to the weekend, but there will be several unrelated events as well.

Local bands will help get the weekend into step on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade sponsored by Theta Xi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

The parade will start at Granger Park and will follow the same route that the Christmas parade took last month. Callaway Middle School student and Chopped Junior runner-up Zikei Brooks will be this year’s parade grand marshal. The event is free and everyone is invited to attend.

On Sunday, Hogansville will honor the late Rev. Bradell Allison-Martin during its fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Hogansville Elementary School Auditorium at 4 p.m. Pastor Jimmy Gibson, Sr. of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Atlanta is scheduled to speak, and former Callaway Cavalier and current Georgia Bulldog Terry Godwin will also be honored at the ceremony.

Finally on Tuesday, Shirley Franklin, former Atlanta Mayor and the first African American woman to be elected mayor of a major Southern city, will speak at the Callaway Auditorium at LaGrange College at 4 p.m.

Franklin was the college’s commencement speaker in 2009, and college president Dan McAlexander said that he felt Franklin was a natural choice for the next in a list of prestigious speakers that the college has hosted for the annual MLK event. The event is free and open to the public.

Some evets unrelated to the holiday will include, Pure Life Studios who will host Trashionality at 7:30 p.m. at 206 Clark Street. Trashionality has been described as a socio-political, high intensity punk rock band. The group is based out of LaGrange. Tickets are $10. On Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., Pattie Harrelson, one of the candidates for Twin Cedar’s Queen of Mask, will host Tumble for Twin Cedars at Tumble Town 2. The event will raise money for Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services by allowing guests to sponsor kids for how many forward rolls, cartwheels, back flips and other tricks sponsors think the kids can perform.
