Jemetrius Hardnett, 19, was arrested after LaGrange Police found suspected methamphetamine on him Friday on Burr Street after 2 a.m. According to the police report, officers were participating in a bike patrol when they noticed Hardnett and another man and decided to talk to them.

According to the police report, officers could smell burnt marijuana coming from both men and asked for consent to search them. They agreed, and Hardnett told an officer he had bath salts in his pocket that he got from his sister’s house, according to the police report.

The officer found a bag of suspected methamphetamine in Hardnett’s pocket and used a field drug test kit, which came back positive as the drug, according to the police report.

The police report says Hardnett said the suspected methamphetamine was bath salts he got from his sister’s house, and he said he needed it to treat an illness he had. He then allegedly changed his story and said his friend gave them to him before saying he found them at a friend’s house and took them. According to the police report, he eventually said he did not know what was in the bag.

While talking to police, Hardnett said an officer could look through his cell phone, and the officer saw several texts related to drug use, according to the police report.

Hardnett is charged with violating Georgia’s Controlled Substance Act for amphetamine possession.

The methamphetamine was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations for drug identification. According to Lt. Mark Kostial, that is standard procedure for drugs.

“With the exception of marijuana which we’re required to test in house, all other narcotics are sent to the GBI for testing,” Kostial said. “That’s common place throughout the state.”

Man uninjured after truck catches fire

A man was not injured after his Dodge Dakota caught fire while he was driving on Youngs Mill Road Saturday around 6:23 a.m.

The man told police he was driving on Hogansville Road when he heard two loud pops come from his truck. When he turned onto Youngs Mill Road, he noticed an orange glow and flames come from under the hood of the truck.

The man stopped the truck in front of a residence on Rutland Circle, grabbed his gun and gun bag and exited. The man told police he called 911 and asked the residents of the house if they had a fire extinguisher.

LaGrange Fire and police responded to the scene. The front end, engine, engine compartment, passenger compartment and truck bed had extensive damage, according to the police report.
