Reverend James “Olin” McClain

The Rev. James “Olin” McClain, 92, of LaGrange, Georgia, left for his heavenly home on Jan. 13, 2018, from West Georgia Hospice.

The Rev. McClain was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Troup County, Georgia, to the late James Joseph McClain and Tiny Bales McClain. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and the United States National Guard of Georgia. Before retirement, he was the general manager of Fling/Steve Harris Ford and faithfully served as Pastor of Wehadkee Baptist Church for 32 years. He served the Lord in ministry and pastored churches in LaGrange for more than 55 years. Olin was also a member of the Optimist Club, Pastor Emeritus of the Troup County Baptist Association, Wehadkee Baptist Church and Flat Shoals Salem Road Baptist Church and was a founding member of the LaGrange area Camp of Gideons International. He was a member of the search committee that purchased the land that is now Rockridge Baptist Assembly and served on the boards of Rockridge, The Harbor, and The Alpha Multipurpose Center.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Lois Yates McClain; sister, Ruby White O’Neal; and grandson-in-law, Adam Vinson.

Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Ken) Carter; son, David Olin (Paula) McClain; grandchildren, Tiffany Vinson, Mary Beth (Garrett) Pelt, Stacie (Keith) Palmer, Logan McClain, and Matthew (Katie) Carter; great grandchildren, Cierra Vinson, Emily Palmer, Saralynn Pelt, Ansley Palmer, and Carter Pelt; sisters, JoAnn Hamilton and Nell (Paul) Joy; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Aaron McCullough and Pastor Cade Farris officiating.  The gathering of family and friends will be on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens. The family will be at his home, 203 N. Dawson St., LaGrange, Georgia 30241.

The family is grateful to the staffs of Twin Fountains Nursing Home and West Georgia Hospice for their excellent care and compassion. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Gideons or West Georgia Hospice in memory of the Rev. James Olin McClain.
