The LaGrange Police Department had worked 13 wrecks by 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, well before the sun went down and any leftover precipitation started to freeze on roadways.

“The majority of those are people who were driving too fast,” said Clint Gibson, a senior patrol officer with the traffic unit of the LPD. “They think the road is somewhat clear and they come around a blindspot. That blindspot is in a shady area where the sun hasn’t hit and they wind up hitting a patch of ice.”

Gibson said wrecks have included a car knocking down two telephone polls on Daniel Street, drivers hitting trees and rear-ending other vehicles. There were no major wrecks, as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Gibson said.

He said the one injury wreck he had worked involved a vehicle being rear-ended, but the injuries appeared minor. A second wreck had just occurred and Gibson was unsure of that driver’s injuries, but an ambulance had been requested.

“We’ve had nothing serious, fortunately,” Gibson said.

He said people should heed the advice of city officials and stay off roadways.

“If there’s anything that I can tell people, the citizens of LaGrange, it is that they need to stay at home if at all possible and come out only if they have to and have no choice,” Gibson said.
