The Jungle Bus made a stop at Lafayette Christian School on Wednesday, doing its best to get children excited about reading at a young age.

The school posted photos on social media, showing children as young as a few months old to those several years old reading books and interacting with Jungle Bus volunteers. The Bookmobile is a combined effort of the United Way Success by Six program and the Troup County School System Title One program, according to its Facebook page.

Along with Wednesday’s stop at Lafayette Christian, the bus has also recently made stops at West Point Elementary School and Berta Weathersbee, as well as other local schools.

The importance of reading at a young age cannot be understated.

Young children who are read to more frequently are 12 percent more likely to recognize all 26 letters of the alphabet, count to 20, write their own names and read or pretend to read, according to statistics from the National Education Association.

Thanks to the Jungle Bus, and those who make it possible, more local children are getting books in their hands.
