Local wrestlers in title matches

A trio of local wrestlers will have a chance to win a state championship today.

Callaway’s Justin Kiss, and Troup’s Chase Seals and Byron Butts have reached the championship match in their respective weight classes at the state meet in Macon.

Kiss, a senior who placed at state as a freshman and a sophomore, will wrestle for the Class AA state title at 120 pounds.

His opponent in the finals will be Kevin Martin of Fitzgerald.

In the semifinals, Kiss beat Wes Conley of Armuchee 4-2 to reach the finals.

Seals beat Cory Strong of Jefferson in the semifinals to make it to the championship match for the second straight year.

Seals opponent in the 145-pound Class AAAA finals will be Ridgeland’s Jacob Mariakis, who won a state championship last season.

Butts, who finished fifth at state last season, will go up against Woodward Academy’s Malcolm Wiley in the Class AAAA 195-pound championship match.

Butts beat Jackson Filipowicz of Blessed Trinity 6-4 in the semifinals.

Also for Troup, Seals, Butts, Pearson Strickland, Darious Hanson, Trevor Upchurch, Scott Hicks and Colby Harry are going to place.

LaGrange has two wrestlers, Matt Callaway and Dexter Fitzpatrick, who will place and earn a medal by finishing sixth or higher.
