The Troup County School System used its emergency alert system to notify parents that additional police officers will be present at LaGrange High School in the coming days, in response to a rumor.

The system used its One Call Now system to alert parents Tuesday afternoon to the impending increase in officer presence.

“We are aware of a rumor circulating regarding the safety of students on Thursday,” read the message sent to parents from the school system.

“After an extensive investigation, we cannot substantiate this rumor. However, in the interest of safety for everyone, we are requesting additional police presence at the school in the coming days. We thank students and parents for making us aware of rumors and ask for continued assistance with these types of issues.”

The school system also used the One Call Now system Friday to alert parents that students were safe, despite rumors at Callaway High School and Troup High School.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office posted a message from Sheriff James Woodruff Tuesday morning, promising that more uniformed deputies would be at local schools in the days ahead.

“We are still in shock of the events that took place last week in South Florida, and like you, many of us sent our children or grandchildren back to school today with perhaps a little unease,” Woodruff said in the post. “Unfortunately, after any horrific act, it brings with it, rumors, fear and those who wish to inflame those fears. To help ease some of those fears you may see an increased presence of our uniformed deputies at our local schools, and we continue to be in constant contact with the school system to help ensure the safety of our students and to investigate specific threats made to any school campus.”
