Prom season will begin this Saturday when The Portal Boutique, Harmony House Domestic Violence Shelter and Becca’s Closet LaGrange team up for the Gown Gala.

The event will sell sample and new gowns for $30, and the proceeds will go toward Harmony House’s Teen Dating Violence Awareness Program.

“Along with getting a gown, you’re supporting one of our local nonprofit organizations that helps bring awareness back to teens. And chances are the teens who are getting these dresses know of someone who’s been in an abusive relationship,” said Michele Bedingfield, Harmony House Executive Director. “It’s kind of two-fold. One, they get the beautiful gown, and, two, they’re helping us to help others.”

Those who attend will be paired up with someone to help them look at gowns. There will also be door prizes for high schoolers to get their hair or nails done.

According to Bedingfield, Portal Boutique and Becca’s Closet wanted to do something to support Harmony House. She said the group is grateful they were approached.

“I’ve seen a lot of [the gowns], they’re modern styles. There’s just a lot of girls who want to go to prom, and I have a teenager just looking at prom dresses. Some of them can be pretty pricey,” Bedingfield said. “This just gives an opportunity for those that may not want to spend the money. They may have it, they just don’t want to spend a lot of money on it, but yet they can donate to us and have themselves a beautiful dress.”

The Gown Gala will be held at Courtyard by Marriot LaGrange from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee.
