The LaGrange Police Department will hold a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event March 29. The free event will teach participants how to react during an active shooter situation, such as how to avoid, deny and defend.

Senior officer Jim Davison said the LPD holds the training periodically.

“If someone wants it for a specific club, function, business, anything at all,” Davison said. “We do churches, we do business and industry, we do schools, and we also do public offerings like this one.”

Davison said they can take as many people as necessary, but about 20 to 30 people usually come.

“We just like to have as many people participate and sign up for it as they can,” Davison said. “Again, we want this message out to everyone. This is a public service that we do, and it’s close to our hearts in a sense that we want everyone to be able to know what to do in this kind of situation because these things aren’t probably going to stop anytime soon.”

Davison said the LPD wants people to be prepared in order to know how to survive these kinds of situations, and it teaches them situational awareness.

“At the end of the day, it teaches you about how to be a survivor,” Davison said. “Statistically, if you look at the numbers, more people do survive these types of events than are killed in these types of events.”
