Busy St. Patrick’s Day weekend ahead

This weekend will be full of Saint Patrick’s Day fun.

The holiday will get off to a running start on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock 5k Fun Run to benefit Troup County Relay for Life.  The event will be hosted by the City of LaGrange’s Relay for Life team in order to raise money for the charity.

“We have a goal of $5,000 [for Relay for Life], and we normally hit it,” said Brenda Leverett, the team leader for the LaGrange City Slickers Relay for Life Team. “If we don’t hit it by the night of Relay, which is April 20, we hit it that night.”

Leverett is an accounting clerk for the City of LaGrange, and she said she has been over the city’s Relay for Life team for 12 years now. She began organizing the city’s team in order to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

“I just wanted to make a difference, and then my dad had leukemia,” Leverett said. “He passed five years ago, and it made me even stronger [in my conviction].”

The race will begin on The Thread behind St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Registration on the day of the event is $25 and will include a t-shirt while supplies last. Lunches will also be sold to raise money for Relay for Life at the event.

Sack lunches including a hot dog, hamburger and chips will also be sold for $6.

All funds raised will go toward the LaGrange City Slickers’ goal of raising $5,000 for Troup County Relay for Life before the April 20 event.

Then starting at 1 p.m., the Greater Valley Area Chamber of Commerce will host St. Paddy’s on the River at River Park in West Point.

The event will feature live music, carnival food, inflatables, face paint, games and arts and crafts vendors. Admission costs $10.

The family fun is scheduled for 2 p.m. with music by Blane Rudd, followed by Tim Dugger at 6 p.m. For more information, visit Business.greatervalleyarea.com/events/details/2018-st-paddy-s-on-the-river-7139.

The free, family friendly event will feature live music, Irish dancers and special deals from downtown restaurants. This year’s performers will include Mr. Terrific and Smoke & Mirrors.

Participants will create their own eggs in the workshop led by Sue Stewart.
