Bring on Chapel Hill.

The LaGrange High girls’ soccer team surged to an early 6-0 lead on Tuesday against Troup, and it went on to claim a 10-0 victory to improve to 3-0 in Region 5-AAAA.

Next up for LaGrange is a showdown with Chapel on Friday in a game that could determine the region championship.

Last season, it was LaGrange beating Chapel Hill in overtime to secure the region title, and the two teams are the favorites again this year.

“I’m looking forward to that one,” said LaGrange’s Maggie Asbell, who signed a letter of intent with Georgia College & State University earlier on Tuesday. “I’m excited to see how it goes.”

In Tuesday’s game, it was all LaGrange.

The Lady Grangers scored six goals in the first 15 minutes, and coaches Andy Fritchley and Colin Ross began substituting liberally to make sure everyone got plenty of time on the field.

Abby Mazzolini scored two goals for LaGrange, and they both came in the first nine minutes.

Asbell, Eva Hutton, Lindsey Woodham, Emma Mathews, Sydney Ormsby, Izzy Pippin and Caroline Thompson each had one goal for LaGrange.

With such an important game coming up, Ross said it was important for the players to play unselfishly, and he felt they did.

“That was our whole purpose was to move the ball around,” he said. “Because we’re not getting (easy scoring chances) on Friday.”

Ross was particularly proud of the team’s top scorers who made sure to get everyone else involved rather than just go one-on-one.

“I gave them specific roles, and they went out and played,” he said. “That allowed everybody else to get in the box, and score goals.”

While there wasn’t much suspense in Tuesday’s games, Asbell said it’s one the players always enjoy.

“It’s an in-town rivalry,” she said. “You’re playing your friends, you know who you’re playing. It’s fun.”
