Summer camp registrations are underway and the LaGrange Police/Fire Department Youth Camp is now taking applications.

LaGrange Police Sgt. Marshall McCoy said the departments teach children what they do and show them their equipment at the free camp. They teach the children fire safety and about smoke detectors, and from the law enforcement side, teach them about physical fitness and show them the K9 unit.

“When we talk about crime scenes, we put it in more of a scavenger hunt,” McCoy said.

McCoy said the departments have held the camp for more than 20 years.

The camp also takes the participants to the movies. McCoy said other agencies also participate, such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who teach the children about water safety.

“As far as the camp goes, this is one of the many activities that we do as a police department to interact with the community in a positive way,” McCoy said. “Each kid is our next generation of leaders, and so this is our way of building those relationships now.”

McCoy said there is no deadline to register, but spots fill up quickly. The first 40 applications for ages 10 to 12 and ages 7 to 9 will be accepted.

“If you’re going to sign up, I’d definitely sign up this month or during the month of April,” McCoy said.

The first camp for children ages 10 to 12 is from June 4 to the 8 and the camp for children ages 7-9 is from June 11-15. The camp is free.
