WEST POINT — As a 25 year veteran, Lt. Derick Staley of the West Point Fire Department enjoys his job and is happy where he’s at.

Staley recalls starting initially working for Heard County Emergency Services for seven years before transferring to West Point, where he has remained for the past 19 years.

“I like the hours better,” he said with a laugh, noting his schedule is 24 hours on the clock, 48 off.

While on the clock, Staley is the shift manager and runs the day-to-day operations. His crew consists of himself and four other members.

“It can be easy or stressful depending on the day,” he said.

Throughout the day, Staley and his crew do several things, from checking the vehicle and equipment to eating and getting briefed on what the previous shift did.

“Recently we did some training at Kia,” he said. “We’re always doing something. Always training on something, trying to stay on top. It makes things go smoother.”

Staley added that with all the training, it is easier to prepare for taking over from another shift.

With everything that has gone on, Staley is happy with where he is at.

“I came to West Point to better my situation, and I’ve been here ever since,” he said. “Of the days here there have been numerous standouts, some I can’t forget. We see good and bad through all of it.”

When not at the station, Staley runs his own woodworking business, building furniture and remodeling rooms.

He also spends time with his wife, Marcy, who he has been happily married to for the past 20 years. They also have two sons, 25-year-old River and 18-year-old Walker. They also have a granddaughter, Aspen, who turns two in May.

Staley is also an avid bow hunter.

“Working for the city lets me be very active with my family,” he said. “It’s all thanks to the hours.”
