The quest for a region championship took a major step forward for LaGrange High’s soccer teams on Friday.

In the girls’ game, LaGrange outlasted Chapel Hill 3-2 to improved to 4-0 in Region 5-AAAA.

There was no suspense in the boys’ game, with LaGrange rolling to a 6-1 win to also move to 4-0 in the region.

Both LaGrange teams have two region games remaining, both on the road.

LaGrange is at Central-Carroll today, and it visits Cartersville on April 19 to complete region play.

In the girls’ game on Friday, it was a rematch of an overtime thriller from a year ago that LaGrange won.

This year’s game was close as well.

LaGrange led 2-0 in the first half, but Chapel Hill produced a goal to get within one at the half.

After LaGrange went up 3-1 in the second half, Chapel Hill scored to again cut its deficit to one, but it was unable to produce the tying goal.

Malone Aldridge, Abby Mazzolini and Sydney Ormsby each scored for LaGrange.

Caroline Thompson had two assists, and Sydney Ormbsy had one.

In the boys’ game, LaGrange led 6-0 before Chapel Hill avoided the shutout with a late goal.

Liam McDonald led the Grangers with three goals, and Jimmy Cancino, Max Halcomb and John McDonald each had one goal.

Robert Reese had two assists, and Austin Stamper, Alex Bowie, Halcomb and Liam McDonald each had one assist.

CALLAWAY: Callaway’s boys’ soccer team took a break from region play and beat Haralson County 7-0 last week.

It was a dominant effort for the Cavaliers, who outshot the Rebels 42-0.

Michael Everett and Ian Bryan each had two goals for Callaway, and Noah Stephens, Joe Neese and Tavian Smiley had one goal apiece.

Elbin Jacob, Stephens and Bryan each had an assist.

“We played very well today,” Callaway head coach Mike Petite said. “The offense had to solve the issue of a compacted defense and we were able to move the ball around well enough to score some high-quality goals. Our possession was very strong and the defense was solid the few times they had to really defend.  That being said, we have to really focus on our next region opponents and finish the region portion of the schedule strong.  Every goal we have set for ourselves is still available to us.  Now it’s on us to go and achieve them.”

Callaway (7-3-2 overall) will put its 5-1 Region 5-AA record on the line on Tuesday against Lamar County.

TENNIS: LaGrange got the best of Troup last week.

In the boys’ match, LaGrange won 4-1, and it won the girls’ match 5-0.
