There were no signs of rust for the Callaway Cavaliers.

By the time Callaway arrived at the field for Tuesday’s game against Lamar County, it hadn’t played a game in more than a week.

The time off didn’t slow down Callaway, which blanked Lamar County 10-0 in five innings to improve to 4-0 in Region 5-AA.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at Lamar County.

Chandler Lott had a big day for the Cavaliers on Tuesday.

The senior not only pitched a one-hitter, but he hit a solo home run as part of a balanced offensive attack.

While the Cavaliers took the week off as far as playing games, head coach Dusty Hubbard said it was still a productive time with some challenging practices.

“We competed hard,” Hubbard said. “And we told the guys that aren’t playing, if you want a spot, go earn it this week.”

The Cavaliers were sharp early on Tuesday.

After Lott had a perfect top of the first, Callaway broke through for four runs in their half of the inning.

The Cavaliers added another run in the second inning on Lott’s home run, and they scored three runs in the fourth inning before ending it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

“I thought we played a good game,” Hubbard said. “I thought we were really clean defensively.”

Lott had it working.

The senior right-hander limited the Trojans to one hit, and he had nine strikeouts in five innings.

“When I was in the bullpen, I felt good,” Lott said. “And when I got out there, I just felt like I had my stuff.

Lott was backed up by some outstanding defense.

“I’m dependent on my defense,” Lott said. “That gives you confidence. It helps to have a good defense, and I trust every one of those guys behind me. I couldn’t do it without them.”

Trent Sheppard and Chandler Lott got Callaway’s first-inning rally started with back-to-back singles, and Braelin Mitchell followed with a two-run double.

Later in the inning, Jabari Smith had an RBI single, and Bryce Kurian capped the rally with an infield single to bring in another run.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Lott got a pitch he could handle, and he drove it over the left-field fence for a home run.

The Cavaliers pushed three more runs across in the fourth inning.

Lott was hit by a pitch, and Mitchell drove the ball off the center-field fence for a double to put men on second and third.

Two batters later, Wesley Marchman’s RBI single gave the Cavaliers a 6-0 lead, and Smith followed with a double to bring in another run.

The inning’s third and final run came home when Brooks Bledsoe reached on an error.

In the fifth inning, Kyle Campbell and Marchman walked with the bases loaded to make it a 10-run game and bring the run rule into play.
