A 13-year-old student who allegedly brought a handgun to Long Cane Middle School Wednesday has been charged with carrying weapons within school safety zones, possession of a stolen gun and obstruction of an officer, according to a press release from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

The student’s arrest was following a two day-investigation into graffiti in a bathroom at the school.

Student Resource Officer Phillip Johnson started investigating the graffiti on Monday, and that investigation led him to the student, according to the press release.

The student was brought into an administrator’s office for questioning. As he was being questioned, the student became very guarded toward his book bag, according the TCSO press release.

A brief struggle occurred after Johnson and an administrator tried to see what was in the book bag. The student was placed in handcuffs following that struggle.

Inside the book bag, a marker used to draw the graffiti and an unloaded black handgun were found, according to the press release.

The student was transported to a regional youth detention center.
