The Callaway Lady Cavaliers were unable to figure out Lamar County, but they had their way with every other soccer team in Region 5-AA.

With Wednesday’s 8-2 home win over Temple, Callaway finished alone in second place in the region with a 6-2 record.

Thanks to its runner-up finish, Callaway will host a first-round game in the state tournament.

A year ago, Callaway was in that same situation, and it beat Rockmart 6-3 for the first state win in the history of the program.

Callaway’s only two region losses this season came to a strong Lamar County team.

Those two teams met for the second and final time on Tuesday, and it was Lamar County coming away with a 4-0 victory.

The Lady Cavaliers had some legitimate scoring opportunities, but they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Lamar was probably the best team we played all season,” Callaway coach Shonna Yawn said. “The girls came out and left it all on the field. They played well. I can’t complain. They did what we needed to do, we weren’t able to finish.”

A day later, Callaway was back on the field against Temple, and it was no contest.

In a one-sided game, Yawn made sure that everyone on the team got some playing time.

“In a game like that, it’s all about making sure everyone is part of the game,” she said.

Kelly Carlisle, a member of Callaway’s talented senior class, led the way with four goals and three assists, and senior Amiya McCurty had two goals.

Cheney Eubanks and senior Chloe McGuffin each had one goal and one assist.

Callaway will take next week off before returning to action on April 9 at Harris County.

Callaway then has home games against South Paulding, Northgate and Mount Zion before hosting a state game on April 26.

This is the home stretch for a group of seniors who have accomplished a great deal during their time at the school.

“It’s a great senior group,” Yawn said. “It’s been amazing working with the group we have, and watching them grow, and see them sign. We’re truly going to miss them next season.”
