It was mission accomplished.

The Callaway Cavaliers started the week hoping to win at least two of the three games against Lamar County, and they made that happen.

After beating Lamar County 10-0 on Tuesday, Callaway topped Lamar County 4-1 on Friday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Lamar County won Friday’s second game 6-2, but Callaway took the series to improve to 5-1 in Region 5-AA and remain in a first-place tie with Heard County.

“I told (the players) if we win two out of three, win each series, we’ll be the (region) champs,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said.

In Friday’s first game, Callaway rode the right arm of Wesley Marchman to the win.

Marchman, a sophomore who hasn’t lost a game this season, pitched into the seventh inning before turning things over to Chandler Lott.

“He just has that ability to not get a lot of hard contact,” Hubbard said. “You force guys to swing at your pitches, and Wesley does such a good job of keeping the ball on the corners and not missing on the middle of the plate.”

Marchman also led the way at the plate with a triple and two RBIs, and Lott had a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Callaway took a 2-0 lead, but Lamar County scored the final six runs.

Early on, the Cavaliers had a chance to break it open.

With two runs already on the board, they had the bases loaded with no outs and the top of the order coming up in the second inning.

Callaway was unable to push any runs across, though, and Lamar County soon took control.

“We had some hits, we just didn’t get them when we needed to,” Hubbard said.

Drake Wade had a pair of hits for the Cavaliers, and Braelin Mitchell, Walt Stewart and Bryce Kurian each had a hit.

Callaway hosts Jordan on Tuesday, and the two teams play twice on Friday, and the games will be at Carver High.
