The Callaway Cavaliers are halfway to a second straight region championship.

Last season, Callaway rolled through its Region 5-AA schedule with an unbeaten record.

The Cavaliers won’t go unbeaten again this season, but they’re still in great position to chase down a repeat title.

With six region games remaining, Callaway and Heard County are sitting atop the region standings with matching 5-1 records.

Callaway and Heard County will finish their region schedules with three games against each other, with a single game on April 10, and two games on April 13.

A year ago, Callaway went 3-0 against Head County to claim the region title.

Those two teams appear headed for another showdown for the top spot this season, although they both still have work to do before they play.

First up for Callaway is three games against Jordan this week, while Heard County has three games against Temple.

Callaway hosts Jordan today, and the two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at Carver High in Columbus.

Jordan is sitting in third place at 4-5, while Temple (2-4) and Lamar County (2-7) bring up the rear.

The top four finishers will qualify for the state playoffs, and the top two teams will host a first-round series.
