LaGrange College’s hopes of winning the USA South softball tournament were dashed on Friday.

Facing Covenant in a first-round series, LaGrange College dropped both ends of a doubleheader on its home field.

After taking the first game 4-2, Covenant finished the sweep with a 3-1 victory.

In the first game, LaGrange College was trailing 4-0 when it pushed two runs across in the bottom of the sixth to cut its deficit in half.

Brittany Todd had an RBI double, and Amber Arnold scored on a wild pitch.

The Panthers were unable to make up any more ground against pitcher Cris Gant, though.

Gant pitched a complete-game two-hitter, and she had nine strikeouts.

Emily Cauldwell tossed a complete game for the Panthers.

Barrs and Todd had the Panthers’ only hits.

In the second game, the Panthers managed their lone run in the top of the fifth inning, with Carolyn Harkness scoring when Sydney Hodorff reached on an error.

The Panthers finished with nine hits, but they left 10 runners on base.

Harkness and Sutton Bridges each had two hits for the Panthers,.

Barrs, Todd, Hodorff, Chelsea Twardoski and Haley Coleman had one hit apiece for LaGrange College.

Twardoski threw a complete game for the Panthers.

While the Panthers won’t participate in the remainder of the USA South tournament, their season isn’t done.

LaGrange College has six games remaining, including four at home.

After visiting Emory on April 17, LaGrange College hosts Agnes Scott on April 19 and Wesleyan on April 22.
