Big inning powers Hurricanes past Grangers

The LaGrange Grangers rallied from a four-run deficit to take the lead against the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes on Friday, but a difficult sixth inning proved to be their undoing.
Trailing by a run, Cartersville hit three home runs and scored 14 runs in the sixth inning on the way to an 18-5 victory in the Region 5-AAAA game.
The Grangers fell to 6-4 in the region and remained in third place, while the Purple Hurricanes improved to 10-0 and stayed in first, a game ahead of the Troup Tigers.
Cartersville scored two runs in each of the first two innings, but LaGrange answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to get within a run.
LaGrange then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before Cartersville broke it open in the sixth inning.
With the bases loaded, Josh Davis gave the Purple Hurricanes the lead with a grand slam, and they hit two more home runs in the inning.
Davis finished the game with two home runs and seven RBIs, and Jake Gooch and Anthony Seigler each had one home run.
For LaGrange, Charles Crawford hit his first varsity home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning.
Ben Farrar and Jake Cardwell each had an RBI single for the Grangers, and Cole Freeman and Trent Bailey had two hits apiece.
LaGrange completes the regular season with region games against Sandy Creek and Chapel Hill next week.
Regardless of the outcome of those games, LaGrange will finish third in the region, and it will be on the road for the first round of the state playoffs.
