Cavaliers win region title

FRANKLIN – They’re number one.

The Callaway Cavaliers beat Heard County 11-3 on Friday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader to win the Region 5-AA championship for the second straight season.

Callaway (19-7 overall) lost the second game of the doubleheader 9-8 to finish 10-2 in the region, while Heard County closed with a 9-3 region record.

It was a tight game until the Cavaliers broke it open with seven runs in the fourth inning, and the Braves were unable to answer.

Chandler Lott had a big game for the Cavaliers.

At the plate, he had an RBI single, as well as a solo home run in the third inning.

Lott also pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Wesley Marchman, who threw the first four innings to get the win.

Kyle Campbell had two hits, including a two-run double during the decisive fourth inning.

Braelin Mitchell had two hits and three RBIs, and leadoff hitter Drake Wade had two hits, two walks, an RBI and three runs scored.

Marchman was on base four times with two hits and two walks, Walt Stewart had a hit and an RBI, Trent Sheppard had a hit and two runs scored, and Bryce Kurian and Jabari Smith each had a hit.

The Cavaliers scored two runs in the top of the first inning with Lott and Mitchell both coming through with RBI singles, but the Braves answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

The Cavaliers reclaimed the lead on Lott’s solo home run leading off the third inning.

Marchman worked around a one-out walk to hold the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the third, and the Cavaliers went to work in the fourth inning. Wade, Mitchell and Campbell each had RBI hits during the seven-run inning.

In Friday’s second game, Heard County scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 9-8.

Sheppard had three hits for the Cavaliers, including two doubles, and Destin Patrick had three hits and an RBI.

Campbell had a double and two RBIs, Bryce Kurian had two hits and an RBI, Mitchell had a hit and an RBI, and Marchman, Brooks Bledsoe and Smith each had a hit.
