Local athletes shine at region meets

Troup’s Ashanti Tigner and Mark-Anthony Dixon each outraced the competition to earn first-place finishes in the Region 5-AAAA meet that was held in Carrollton last week.

That was part of a successful meet for a number of athletes from Troup and LaGrange who qualified for the state sectional by finishing in the top four in an event.

Tigner and Dixon got it done in the sprint events.

In the 100-meter dash, Tigner placed first with a time of 12.38 seconds, and she finished just ahead of Derica Price of Chapel Hill.

Dixon’s win came in the 200-meter dash.

Dixon, a sophomore is a standout wide receiver on the football team, finished with a time of 22.31 seconds to edge Tyre Shelton of Chapel Hill.

Tigner and Dixon are also headed to the state sectional in two other events.

Tigner was second in the 200, and Dixon placed second in the 100.

Tigner and Dixon will be joined at the state sectional by a handful of their teammates.

Dixon, Tyree Carlisle, Jamari Thrash and Kobe Hudson finished third in the 400-meter relay.

Finishing fourth for Troup were Catherine Leveritt (400-meter run), Larodia Ramsey (100-meter hurdles, high jump), the 400-meter relay team of Leveritt, Tigner, Harris and Destiney Stephens, Alonzo Ogletree (300-meter hurdles) and Jamari Thrash (high jump).

LaGrange’s girls team, which finished second in the team standings, will be well-represented in the state sectional.

Annaya Chelcy, who had the fastest preliminary time in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, placed third in both of those events to advance to the sectional.

Yaigkirhiatg Benn was second in the 100-meter hurdles, and Jada Grant was second in the long jump and the triple jump.

Also finishing second for LaGrange was Shanteria Kelly in the high jump, Zakeria Staples in the 300-meter hurdles, and the 400-meter relay team of Chelcy, Grant, Staples and Quay Robinson.

Finishing third for LaGrange’s girls’ team was Chelcy in the 200-meter dash, Robinson in the 400-meter run, and the 1,600-meter relay team of Robinson, Jartavia Manley, Staples and Brandasia Cofield.

Renaya Edmondson finished fourth in the discus and the shot put.

For LaGrange’s boys’ team, Dylan Norvell had the best time during the qualifying portion of the 100-meter dash, and he was third in the finals.

Norvell also made it to state in the 200-meter dash with a fourth-place finish.

Cameron Thomas was third in the triple jump, and Ty Whitehead was third in the discus.

CALLAWAY: Callaway’s girls’ 400-meter relay team stole the show during the Region 5-AA meet that was held at Heard County.

Taghaza Lindsey, Hannah Mutfwang, Serenity Hill and Aniyah Simpson had a time of 51.20 seconds to edge Temple for the top spot.

Simpson also grabbed an individual championship in the 400-meter run, finishing two seconds ahead of Tori Chivers of Temple.

Curreshe’ion Carroll was third in the 400-meter run, DeAsia Hill was third in the 100-meter hurdles, and Hill was fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Callaway’s boys’ team was led by D.J. Atkins, who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.47 seconds.

Callaway’s boys’ 400-meter relay team of Osiris Rivas, Tely Fanning, Curmondre Bray and Atkins nearly won a title as well.

Callaway had the fastest time in the preliminary race, but it finished second in the finals to Jordan.

Bray was third in the 200-meter dash, Darrick Williams was third in the 100-meter dash, and Rivas was fourth in the 400-meter run.
