Callaway gets historic win

It was a history-making night for the Callaway Cavaliers.
Callaway’s boys’ soccer team overwhelmed Douglass-Atlanta 8-0 on Thursday to win the first state-playoff game in the history of the program.
Callaway will try to keep it going when it heads to Rome on Tuesday to face Model in the second round of the playoffs.
“I am so excited,” Callaway head coach Mike Petite said. “We won the first ever state-playoff game. We tied the team record with wins in a season. This is our 12th win. So we’ve accomplished some great things. But I said, let’s not be satisfied. Let’s keep going. And if we play to our capability, to our level, we can make some things happen.”
The Cavaliers didn’t face much opposition on Friday in a game that ended early because of the mercy rule.
Michael Everett scored on a rebound 13 minutes into the game to give the Cavaliers their first goal, and they rolled from there.
Ian Bryan continued his monster season by scoring three goals, and he has 30 goals for the season.
Grayson Lambert, Wes Brooks, Noah Stephens, and Caprice Williams also scored for Callaway.
Lambert, Bryan, Brooks, Joe Neese and Tyler Lewis each had an assist.
Josh Cooprider continued to excel in goal with six saves.
Defensively, Petite said Tavian Smiley, Christain Snyder and Coleman Arrington got it done on defense.
“Collectively, the back three take pride in making sure it gets locked down,” Petite said.
