It’ll be a matchup of the titans when the Troup Tigers travel to Roswell to take on Blessed Trinity this week.

When the Georgia Dugout Preview magazine unveiled its final poll of the regular season, Blessed Trinity was ranked first in Class AAAA, and Troup was fifth.

On Thursday, those two teams will square off in the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

Both teams swept their way to victory in the opening round.

While Troup beat Ridgeland in its playoff opener, Blessed Trinity handled Stephens County to advance.

Also this week, Callaway’s baseball team will look to keep its season going when it hosts Rabun County in the second round of the Class AA playoffs.

Callaway swept B.E.S.T Academy in the opening round, while Rabun County beat Rockmart in two games.

Troup (25-7) and Blessed Trinity (30-2) are both red hot heading into their highly-anticipated playoff series.

Troup (25-7), which is the number two seed from Region 5-AAAA despite finishing tied for the top spot with Cartersville, has won seven consecutive games.

Against Ridgeland, Troup received powerful pitching performances from Garrett Casey and Colby Williams on the way to the series sweep.

Casey pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts an 8-0 victory in the first game, and Williams tossed a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts in a series-clinching 7-0 win.

Blessed Trinity, the number one seed from Region 7-AAAA, beat Stephens County 5-2 and 11-0 to advance.

Blessed Trinity has been on the doorstep of a state title the past two years.

Blessed Trinity finished second to Westmisnter in 2016, and it reached the championship series again last year before falling to Marist.

Blessed Trinity won state championships in 2016, 2014 and 2015.

The winner of the series will play either Columbus or Burke County in the quarterfinals.

While Callaway had no trouble with B.E.S.T. in the opening round, Rabun County won two hard-fought games against Rockmart.

Rabun County, the number three seed from Region 8-AA, beat Rockmart 3-0 and 3-1 in the first round.

Callaway, the Region 5-AA champion, overwhelmed B.E.S.T. 16-0 and 16-0 to advance.

If Callaway (22-9) beats Rabun County, it would face either Harlem or Thomasville in the third round.

Also this week, the soccer teams from LaGrange and Callaway will look to keep their seasons alive with wins in the second round of the playoffs.

Both Callaway teams will be playing on Tuesday against Model in the Class AA playoffs, and the games will be in Rome.

Both Model’s teams won Region 7-AA, and Callaway’s teams are the number two seeds from Region 5-AA.

Callaway’s girls’ team crunched South Atlanta 10-1 in the first round, while Model beat Putnam County 3-0.

The winner of the game will face Thomasville or East Laurens in the quarterfinals.

Callaway’s boys’ team beat Douglass 8-0 last week to win the first state game in the history of the program.

Model beat Social Circle 7-1 to advance.
