Football is back.

While a new season is nearly four months away, the local teams will be going at it for the next two weeks during spring practice.

The Lafayette Christian School Cougars, who are set to make the transition to 11-man football this season, got things started on Monday with their first day of spring practice.

The Troup Tigers and LaGrange Grangers will begin spring practice today, and the Callaway Cavaliers get started on Thursday.

Each team has 10 practice days available as they look to firm things up before heading into the summer.

It’ll be a milestone day at LaGrange today as the Grangers hit the field under the direction of new head coach.

Dialleo Burks stepped down after four seasons, and Chuck Gibbs is his replacement.

Gibbs, an Auburn native who played football at the United States Military Academy (Army), has spent the past four seasons as the head coach at Scottsdale Christian Academy in Arizona.

Now, Gibbs will look to turn around a LaGrange program that has struggled in recent years.

Last year, in fact, the Grangers failed to win a game.

For the next two weeks, Gibbs will get a look at his new team as he leads the players through the 10 days of spring practice.

LaGrange will complete spring practice with a game against Manchester on May 18 at Callaway Stadium.

Troup will be under the direction of fourth-year head coach Tanner Glisson.

After the Tigers struggled to a 1-9 record in Glisson’s first season, they’ve turned things around the past two years.

Troup enjoyed a sensational turnaround in 2016 and went 8-3, and it followed that up with a 9-3 record a year ago.

Troup will travel to Newnan High on April 18 for a spring game.

Callaway is led by Pete Wiggins, who is back for his 14th season as head coach.

Wiggins has an overall record of 115-42, and the team is coming off another outstanding season.

Callaway went 11-2 last season and reached the Class AA quarterfinals before falling to Brooks County.

Callaway will put the wraps on spring practice with a game at Legion Field in Birmingham on April 19.

Callaway’s opponent will be Montgomery Catholic.

Lafayette Christian, which has enjoyed tremendous success as an eight-man program, is taking the leap to 11-man football this season.

Lafayette Christian is led by Nate Shaw, who led the team to a state championship in 2015.
