The Callaway Cavaliers, coming off another successful football season under head coach Pete Wiggins, hit the practice field on Thursday for the opening of spring practice.

It was the first of nine practices for the Cavaliers, and they’ll finish the spring with a game against Montgomery Catholic on May 19 at Jacksonville State’s stadium in Alabama.

The spring game was originally going to be played at Legion Field in Birmingham, but it has been moved to Jacksonville State.

Callaway jumped into spring practice on a warm day, with the temperature reaching into the mid-80s.

“The kids handled it well on the field, and they were excited to get out there,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said.

The Cavaliers are getting ready for a new season that will begin on Aug. 24 against Opelika.

Last season, Callaway went 11-2 and reached the Class AA quarterfinals.

“You can see a lot of holes that we need to fill from the departure of 17 seniors,” Wiggins said. “A lot of them had started for three years. But I was real excited about the kids’ attitude and the work ethic today. They’ve worked hard to get to this point, and I’m excited that it’s here.”

The LaGrange and Troup football teams were on the field for their second day of spring practice on Thursday.

LaGrange will continue to work toward its spring game on May 18 against Manchester at Callaway Stadium.

Troup’s spring game will be at Newnan on May 18.
