NEWNAN – For the past two seasons, Troup’s Kobe Hudson was one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the state.

With Montez Crowe at quarterback, Hudson put up massive numbers as a freshman and a sophomore, and he established himself as one of the state’s most heavily-recruited players.

Now, with Crowe set to begin his college career at Savannah State, Troup head coach Tanner Glisson is looking for someone new to man the quarterback position.

Hudson, who has shown what he can do as a wide receiver, could be that man.

Hudson, along with Nick Schweizer, played quarterback during Friday’s spring game against Newnan.

Hudson looked comfortable behind center, and he had two touchdown runs in the first half, although one of them was called back because of a penalty.

Troup and Newnan fought to a 14-14 tie, and it was 7-7 in the first half when the starters were on the field.

“He’s a special player,” Troup head coach Tanner Glisson said of Hudson, who has committed to Auburn. “I was really pleased with how he took care of the football. He wasn’t running with it real loose, and that was good to see.”

Glisson said that Hudson announced his presence with authority on his first carry.

“The first run he made, he broke it for about eight yards and squared up a safety pretty good and lowered his shoulder, and I think that kind of set the tone for us for the game as far as how we tried to run the ball,” Glisson said.

Glisson was also pleased with how effective the running game was, with Tyree Carlisle and Trey Williams doing a lot of damage.

“We tried to come out and establish the run, and we ran the ball very well in the first half,” Glisson said. “And we wanted to make sure we didn’t get anybody hurt, and we didn’t. And we wanted to see about the quarterback possession, and see how Kobe and Schweizer handled that. So all in all, we think it was a pretty good night. We won’t know until we see the film, but I think we’re in a pretty good situation.”

The Tigers moved the ball well throughout the first half, although they managed just the one touchdown.

In the second half, after Newnan took a 14-7 lead, Troup tied it in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Tyson Duncan to Sydney Lawson.

Mark-Anthony Dixon, who was a big-play wide receiver last season, was effective as a running back in the second half.

Defensively, Troup’s first-team unit was dominant in the first half.

Newnan scored on its first play from scrimmage, but it didn’t do much offensively after that.

“From a defensive standpoint, I feel like there was once or twice where we didn’t get in our run fits, but I felt like we did pretty good interior, and I thought King Mwikuta had a good night tackling,” Glisson said.

Troup, which is coming off a 9-3 season that ended with a close loss to St. Piux X in the second round of the state playoffs, will take a little time off before beginning its summer program.

“It was a really good spring for us,” Glisson said. “We tried to establish a physicality, and I think we’ve done that.

“Now we’ve got to go back and see the film, and maybe tweak some things from a personnel standpoint, and get ready to kick this thing off this fall.”
