The primary elections are over, barring a runoff, and candidates in non-partisan races can now get to work.

As were writing this, we don’t know the results from Tuesday night’s election, needing to get some pages to press before a long evening of gathering results and putting together the rest of the paper. Regardless of who wins, Wednesday is a new day in LaGrange and Troup County.

We’ll have at least one new person on the Troup County School Board, and two, if any of the three candidates in district 7 avoid a runoff.

Everyone who ran for a political office, especially locally, deserves praise. It is not easy to put yourself out there publicly, knowing that at the end of the day the general public may vote for your opponent. Defeat is never easy to swallow, and politics are humbling.

We congratulate everyone who ran for office in this election. We need more people to run for office, giving voters even more choices at the polls. Win or lose, every candidate had a vision on how to make Troup County a better place to live and work.

Now, let’s all roll up our sleeves and work together. There’s plenty to be done.
