It’s camp time.

The West Georgia Superstar Football Camp will return for its 25th year today, with dozens of boys and girls set to participate.

The camp will be held today and Saturday at Callaway Stadium for boys and girls ages 8 to 18, and there will be no charge.

Among the instructors will be a host of men who played in college and in the NFL, including the camp’s founder, Ruben Hairston.

Hairston began the camp a quarter of a century ago as a way to give something back to his hometown, and it has run continuously since the first year.

“Every year we get motivated and ready to go,” Hairston said. “It’s like when you’re a player getting ready for the season. You work toward that time of year.”

The campers will get a chance to learn from a star-studded group of instructors that in the past has included, among others, Aundray Bruce, who was a number one pick in the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Bruce was an All-American player at Auburn.

Another regular instructor is Smokey Hodge, who also played at Auburn and in the NFL.

“A lot of kids may never have an opportunity to meet an NFL guy,” Hodge said at last year’s camp. “When I was coming up, I didn’t have that opportunity, I didn’t have this. So it’s a privilege for me to come back and talk to the kids, and teach the kids, and make sure they know the fundamentals.”

Hairston said the instructors always enjoy being around the kids and teaching the sport they love.

“I think everybody that’s involved in it really enjoys it and looks forward to coming out here every year,” Hairston said. “They look forward to coming back.”
