Girls working hard at camp

The future Lady Grangers are hard at work this week.
LaGrange High’s softball program is hosting a youth camp, and head coach Gabby Heath hopes to see some of the young girls wearing the Granger colors a few years down the road.
“We have a lot of kids from our feeder schools,” Heath said. “It’s good to make that connection early. They know what we’re doing here. They know what our program is about.”
The camp began on Monday and will wrap up on Friday, and the girls are on the field for three hours each day from 9 a.m. until noon.
As has been the case each summer, Heath has the players on her team helping out during the camp.
She believes that’s a valuable experience for the campers, as well as her players.
“When they see our girls having fun and enjoying being out here, it’s contagious for them as a younger player to want to be like that,” Heath said. “They find role models. I think it’s good for our kids, too, to have to teach the skills. I always tell them, if you can teach it, you know what you’re doing.”
Also helping Heath during the camp are her assistant coaches, Jim Reed, Craig Mobley and Jeff Skinner, and she’s grateful for their help.
“I have one of the best coaching staffs,” Heath said. “We have so many different skills sets, and everybody bought in and is so in to making the program better.”
While Heath and the other coaches have made sure to keep things fun this week, they’re also doing their share of teaching.
For instance, during Wednesday’s camp session, the players participated in a bunting drill, which Heath figures was valuable for the players.
“A lot of them have never done it,” Heath said. “So maybe we’re teaching them something they can use later on, and teach their teammates about.”
The camp will wrap up on Friday, and Heath said that’ll be a fun day.
“We do the slip-and-slide, and games and competitions,” she said.
