Camp Winshape is teaching children skills along with the gospel this week at Lafayette Christian School. Camp director Antonio Del Sesto said the eighth annual stop in LaGrange is teaching children skills from science to cooking to archery along with the meaning of Psalm 23.

“Winshape camps, our big thing, is we provide an unprecedented day camp experience that we strive to bring churches and organizations together to transform communities and campers and families with the great message and gospel of Jesus Christ,” Del Sesto said. “We really believe in that mission and believe it can have a big impact on families and connect local families with the church, so that’s our big thing there.”

Winshape is a weekly day camp that moves to different cities each week. Del Sesto said the original camp was founded as an overnight camp in 1985 in Mount Berry by Chick-fil-A owner Truett Cathy. The day camps started in 2007.

On Friday, the camp hosts Chick-fil-A family fun day, which hosts the campers’ families as it closes the camp.

Del Sesto said the camp has a church host it in each city, and First Baptist Church on the Square is hosting LaGrange’s.

“What we were talking about today was the Lord our shepherd calms us,” camper Mackenzie Probst said. “I’ve been to other camps, but to be honest, this is my favorite camp.”

About 250 children are at the camp this week. Camper Emarie Johnston said her favorite activities this week were wacky science and painting.

“Our tracks are really fun, and you don’t know what to choose from because it’s so fun,” Johnston said. “I’m planning to volunteer.”

Del Sesto said the name Winshape comes from Cathy and his wife wanting the camp to shape winners.

“The community of LaGrange has treated us really well,” Del Sesto said. “And it’s been a great week and awesome for us to be here.”
