Library to remain closed until at least Friday

The LaGrange Memorial Library won’t be open until Friday at the earliest after a couple of setbacks occurred when installing the building’s new air conditioning unit.

The library has been closed since last Thursday when temperatures inside the building reached nearly 90 degrees. The air conditioning unit stopped working on June 19, but the library was able to finish its summer reading program on June 20 by utilizing the Fackler room, which has a standalone air conditioning unit.

Keith Schuermann, director of the Troup-Harris regional library system, originally estimated the library would reopen by Monday or Tuesday, but now it could be next week.

“We were going to open [Thursday], but it’s looking like Friday now,” Schuermann said. “Unless we run into some more issues.”

Schuermann said they’ve run into a couple of problems fitting the pipes for the new unit, which is slowing the process down.

“But he’s out there right now, welding in 90-degree weather,” Schuermann said of a worker trying to fix the problem.

The book drop is open. Schuermann said any books placed in the book drop will be backdated to the date of closure.
