This weekend figures to be a fun one at Pyne Road Park, as hundreds of locals take part in the third annual West Point Lake Dragon Boat Race.

The race includes 30 teams made up of 20 paddlers each.

Each 46-foot long boat will also include a drummer and a professional steerer as teams race across the lake. Local businesses and community organizations have found the race to be a great bonding experience and a fun way to spend a Saturday.

It’s also all to support a good cause. Harmony House Domestic Violence Shelter hosts the race and all proceeds go toward the shelter. Harmony House serves victims of domestic violence 24 hours a day, seven days a week and every dollar counts.

The first two races have drawn big crowds, and organizers are hoping to see another one on Saturday.

The teams have been locked in place for several weeks, but there will be plenty of activities for anyone not racing as well. The event is also a festival for spectators and will include food vendors, drummers and an emcee.

This is still a growing event that has already shown a lot of promise during its first two years in LaGrange. It’s exactly the kind of unique gathering that makes Troup County so special.

And really, what could be more fun than watching the De’Cay Slayers (Childress Dental Center), The Cast-a-Weighs (The Body Shop), The Royal Flush (Jackson Plumbing), Lou’s Crew (the LaGange Police and Fire  Department), the Disciple“Ship” (Clearview Chapel) and others race down the lake in dragon-shaped boats?

Any money spent is going to a good cause, and the day figures to be a lot of fun. We hope to see you out there.
