Mrs. Mattie Haynes Gilbert

The celebration of life service for Mrs. Mattie Haynes Gilbert, of 85 Teaver Road, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, East 10th Street in West Point. Dr. W. T. Edmondson will officiate. Burial will be in the Southview Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilbert, daughter of the late Taylor Haynes and Mary Brown Slaughter, was born March 8, 1930, in Troup County. She joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age. She later united with the Bethlehem Baptist Church in West Point where she served faithfully as a member of the Mother’s Ministry.

She leaves to cherish her memories, three sons, John Henry (Viola) Gilbert, the Rev. Tommy (Gaynell) Gilbert and Henry Lewis Gilbert, all of LaGrange; three daughters, Betty Shavers, Ollie Gilbert and Gail (Nathaniel) Tatum, all of LaGrange; son-in-law, Arthur Sellers of LaGrange; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; her extended family, Eddie Reed, the Rev. C. F. Reed, Willie (Judy) Reed, all of LaGrange; James Reed, Atlanta; Mattie Reed, Christine Gilbert, Mary (Anthony) Cunningham, LaGrange; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; also a very special sister-in-law, Mary Gilbert, LaGrange; a special nephew, the Rev. Sylvester Hicks; and five special caregivers, Ollie Gilbert, Tonya Gilbert, Kenya Gilbert; Terrick and Derrick Coleman. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Essie B. Gilbert; stepfather, Samuel Slaughter; two brothers, Walter and Wallace Haynes; and five children, Joe Henry Gilbert, Mattie Pearl Sellars, Mary Ann Moss, Essie Mae Gilbert and Horace Lamar Gilbert. 

Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
