The seniors on the Callaway football team traded in their shoulder pads for golf clubs on Friday afternoon.

More than 20 Cavaliers participated in a one-day training session at the Fields Golf Club.

The players spent some time on the range, on the putting green, and in the club house learning the rules of the game.

Charlie Vincent, with the help of former LaGrange High standout Taylor Hall, worked with Callaway’s football players.

“I really appreciate Charlie Vincent taking the time out of his day to get these kids an opportunity to have a skill for down the road,” said Pete Wiggins, Callaway’s head coach.

“He’s big-hearted, and he’s taken a lot of time with the kids, and I really appreciate it.”

Wiggins figures it’s a nice change of pace for the players, who have been putting in the work during the summer months getting ready for a season that begins in less than a month.

“We’ve been working hard all summer,” Wiggins said. “To break up the grind of the weight training, and practice, and to get to come out here and have a good time on the course is really good for the kids. There’s a camaraderie that comes forward.”

This is the second straight summer Vincent has offered a free clinic for the seniors on the team.

Both years the lesson was held at The Fields.

“I really appreciate the Fields for allowing us to come out here, and to Charlie for giving his time to build a relationship with our kids, and our school,” Wiggins said. “He called me and said, let’s do this again. It was a great time last year.”

Wiggins said he’s heard from a handful of players from last year’s team about the positive experience they had.

“I’ve had several phone calls from last year’s seniors saying coach I really appreciate that day out on the golf course,” Wiggins said. “You never know what a kid may take from a day like today. Hopefully it presents them an opportunity to do something that a lot of them haven’t done.”

Wiggins added that Vincent is “serious about it, and the kids are excited about being here. The chatter in the locker room before he came over was neat to hear. They were looking to coming here.”
