The LaGrange City Council corrected what city staff calls an oversight on Tuesday by voting to require all pouring establishments, including breweries, to get a pouring license. 

The city council unanimously approved the updated ordinance, which will require all employees pouring beer at any establishment to have an ABC card. The cards can be obtained through the LaGrange Police Department. The big change is that until Tuesday, breweries were not covered under the ordinance, which was last updated before there was a brewery or brewpub within city limits.

“Chief [Lou] Dekmar reached out to me and had some concerns that those people serving there [at the brewery] did not have ABC cards,” City Manager Meg Kelsey said. “We looked back at the law, and they did not have to have a pouring license. They were not required under the stipulations in the code to get ABC cards.”

All employees serving alcohol at LaGrange restaurants are already required to have ABC cards, which certify the completion of training on how to safely and legally serve alcohol, beer and liquor.  

“An ABC card is issued by the police department to the employees who actually serve alcohol, and it comes with mandatory training,” LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton said.

Dekmar said that the LPD also runs a criminal history report on applicants.

The LaGrange City Council will meet again on Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at 208 Ridley Avenue.
