LPD searches for leads in homicide investigation

The LaGrange Police Department continues to search for leads in a murder and aggravated assault incident that took place on Houston Street on July 21.

The shooting case is the fourth murder in LaGrange this year. Two other individuals were injured in this case, one of which was the son of the deceased victim.

According to the LPD, the initial investigation revealed that all three victims had just arrived at Houston Street when a dark colored car drove by and stopped. A male subject exited the suspect vehicle and shot multiple times into the victims’ car before fleeing the area.

Two of the victims were released from the hospital the same night that they were admitted, according to LPD Lt. Dale Strickland.

However, John Davis was pronounced dead after being transported from the Houston Street to a Columbus area hospital following the incident.

Council Member Nathan Gaskin brought up the shooting at last week’s LaGrange City Council meeting and called for prayer in the wake of the shooting, which took place near his home.

“A tragic homicide took place on the street behind where I live, and actually in front of where my grandchildren live,” Gaskin said. “For me, as a city council member, to witness the carnage and to not speak upon it, I would be derelict in my duty.”

Gaskin said that he was on the scene following the incident, and he extended his sympathy to the family.

“The fact that a son saw his father gunned down in that fashion hurts me real deep,” Gaskin said. “I just want to express to the city that we need to be in constant prayer, and we also need to do something. We have to do something.”

Gaskin suggested that the city consider allowing activities that promote good moral character count toward community service work, but he did not introduce a plan at the meeting, which was just days after the shooting and murder.

Meanwhile, the LaGrange Police Department asked that anyone with any information on the suspect to come forward.

“We are asking for their help in identifying the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle that was in the area at the time of the shooting,” Strickland said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Jeremy Jones, Sgt. Robert Kirby or Lt. Strickland with the LPD at (706) 883-2603.

Information may also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (706) 812-1000.
