The field is under water, but hopefully the show will go on.

The Callaway, LaGrange and Troup softball teams are scheduled to open the season on Saturday with a round-robin series of games at Granger Park.

It’s a special occasion, not only because it’s the season opener for the teams, but because it’s cancer-awareness day.

The teams will be wearing uniforms adorned with pink, and money raised will go to the local H.O.P.E. for a day organization.

The only possibly stumbling block is the weather.

Thanks to the heavy rain over the past few days, the softball field at Granger Park is soaked, but if the weather cooperates, the plan is to go ahead with the games.

In Saturday’s first game, it’ll be Troup vs. LaGrange at 10 a.m.

Callaway and Troup will play at noon, and LaGrange and Callaway will face off at 2 p.m. in the final game.

“From our side, we really enjoy the sense of unity within our community by participating in something like that for a good cause,” said Gabby Heath, LaGrange’s head coach. “Bringing all the softball programs together is definitely a great way for the softball community in LaGrange to see everybody together. And our girls love playing against girls they grew up playing with.”

Kayla Yeargin, who has taken over as Troup’s head coach after serving as an assistant the past few years, said her team is “excited and ready to go.”

“Hopefully a lot of people will come out and support all three, because it’s such a good cause,” she added. “And maybe we can kind of knock off some of those big-game nerves in the beginning, too.”

Each team will have one cancer survivor as a representative, and each of them will throw out a first pitch before one of the games.

“A lot of times when we get to choose our person, it’s people that have been around our softball program, or been around the girls,” said Robyn McCann, Callaway’s first-year head coach. “That makes it that much more special to have that person out there representing each school.

From a competitive standpoint, Troup would like to see a repeat from a year ago when it went 2-0, and that included a dramatic 9-8 win over LaGrange.

LaGrange beat Callaway and finished 1-1, and Callaway lost both of its games.

10 a.m. – Troup vs. LaGrange

noon – Callaway vs. Troup

2 p.m. – LaGrange vs. Callaway
