Pastor Jerome Shipman passed away Monday.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1955, in Ozark, Alabama, to late Lee Curtis and Marie (Cawthon) Shipman. 

At early age, Jerome began attending St. Paul AME Church, in Ozark, Alabama. In 1996, Jerome yet again answered God’s request for him to lead as pastor of New Macedonia Baptist Church. Under his leadership, the church experienced growth and a physical relocation from Old Hutchinson Mill Road to the current site at 111 Johnson Street.  

For his diligent service and untiring efforts for all citizens within the community, Troup County established Dec. 11 as “Jerome Shipman Day”.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Shipman; five children, Demetric (LaQuiesha) Shipman, Tracy Shipman Maddox, Chandra (Mark) Fields, Yolanda Dents, Christie (Darren) Wright; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; 11 siblings,  Jonathan Coleman, Lee Curtis Shipman Jr., Mary Jean McGee, Jennie Theus, Delois (Gennie) Grant, Jerry (Lynette) Shipman, Celene Steward, Celestine Shipman, Isolene Shipman, Debra Shipman and Celotis Shipman; sister-in-law, Betty Billlingslea; brothers-in-law, John Ackols, Bobby Harris and Earlie Harris; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The celebration of life service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church on the Square.
