Helen Lurine Lawson Soderberg, 86, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born Sept. 12, 1931, in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Willie Oridess and Julia Lucille Anderson Lawson.

Mrs. Soderberg was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Winthrop College. She taught second grade at Co-Op Elementary School until marrying the love of her life, Roger Soderberg in 1960 and moving to Greenville, South Carolina. After a short time, they moved to LaGrange, Georgia. There she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she faithfully attended Sunday school and was always a willing volunteer. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several clubs. She had a love of reading and belonged to her book club for many years as well as her wonderful garden Club. Mrs. Soderberg was very involved with the Symphony Guild and served in various capacities to raise funds for numerous projects. She served on the Heart Board as well as volunteering as a “Pink Lady.” The Soderbergs moved to Spartanburg in 2014 to be near family. Here, she became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Roger H. Soderberg; daughter, Karen Lyon (Robert) of Spartanburg, South Carolina; son, Brian Soderberg (Tanya) of Atlanta, Georgia; granddaughter, Ansley Lyon and grandson, Robert Lyon both of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and sisters, Norma Knott of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Melba Bishop (Harry) and Janice Doyle (Marty) both of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Nina Tyson.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, 830 Friendship Church Rd., Pauline, South Carolina 29374, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Petersen. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside.
