They wore masks, capes and came prepared to run Saturday morning, but the superheroes at LaGrange Academy may have made their biggest mark cheering.

The school held a 5K and 1-mile fun run Saturday morning with a super hero theme, and many of the academy’s younger students dressed up and ran the shorter race. After they were done, many got in a line near the finish and high five’d 5K runners, who were mostly adults, and cheered them on.

“This year we decided to a super hero theme as a fun way to get people excited,” said co-organizer Jessica Frazier. “This race is to support our teachers, and we wanted to make sure we get a bunch of school spirit.”

The race is organized by the LaGrange Academy Parent Association as a way to raise money to support teachers and other needs at the school.

“We like this to be a community outreach. Anybody in the community is welcome to come,” said Ashley Salter, who also helped organize the race for LAPA.

“We just want to have some fun and come together.”

The race is also a way to promote good health, and more than 120 people took part. Chick-fil-A donated cards for free chicken to all participants and Kona Ice gave away snow cones after the race.

Brian Dolinger, head of school for LaGrange Academy, was thankful for the large turnout and the support of LAPA.

“Any successful school is going to be built on a partnership of parents, teachers and students and coming out on a Saturday morning, seeing everybody supporting the school for something fun is a great feeling,” Dolinger said.  “This is our sixth annual, and we’ve had more attendance here than we’ve had any other year.”
